Debt Help Commercials on Television, but Beware!

When you turn on your television nowadays, you are bombarded with ads promising to help you with your debt.  I took particular note one day of a company that offers to help consumers with their credit card debt.

When I logged online to check out the company, there wasn’t much about the company on the site.  On the website, you are given a unique 1-800 number to call, but the main service is a list of credit counseling agencies in every on of the 50 states.

The list also includes, but isn’t limited to the only consumer credit counseling service is worthy of a recommendation, and that is the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (www.nfcc.org).   So if you’re drowning in credit card debt with more than just one credit card company, then you should try contacting the folks at www.nfcc.org for help.

The NFCC can be able to set up some sort of plan for you to manage your debt so that reduces or even eliminates late fees and or interest payments. Another good thing about it is that it can all be set up so that it lets you make just one payment per month to the NFCC, which they then use to pay your creditors with.  If none of the above works, then the NFCC can be able to help you explore bankruptcy as an option.

Another debt solutions company television ad that I saw promised an “immediate reduction of your debt.”  To be frank, such a promise is almost always impossible (unless you win the lotto), and one should not even trust anything else such a company would say.  Various other companies make it sound as if you can eliminate your debt without any pain or hassle.  The reality is that it is usually painful with a lot of hassle involved.  Still other companies just want you to make upfront payments.  You should NEVER EVER do that.

So, if you are drowning in debt, then you should seek help first from the NFCC or seek a bankruptcy attorney.
